Summer Art Program – Expressions of the Divine

Summer Art Program at South Congregational Church

1301 Forbes Street, East Hartford, CT

Expressions of the Divine

This program will fulfill the final project requirement for my certification as a Spiritual Director.

What is Spiritual Direction:  The purpose of spiritual direction is to deepen one’s relationship with God/the Divine through companionship with another seeker or seekers.  It can be conducted in a group setting or one-on-one.  My goal, as a Spiritual Director, is to help individuals develop an authentic way of being in relationship with the divine.

What is Expressive Art?  Through guided meditation, participants in this program will be invited to use imagination and intuition to bring forth impressions and images which are then translated into physical form using a variety of creative materials including paper, paint, stencils, images cut from publications, found images, fabric scraps, etc.

Who should attend?  Spiritual seekers who are interested in exploring their inner spiritual life through expressive art.  Participants will create images that reflect their interpretation of one of these aspects of the Divine:  1) Creation; 2) Incarnation; 3) Inspiration.  There will be a $5.00 fee to cover the cost of materials. NO ARTISTIC ABILITY NEEDED.  Expressive art is non-representational; there is no need for traditional art skills such as drawing ability or color theory.

At the end of the summer sessions, student works will be displayed in an art show to which the church and local community will be invited.  Each artist will provide a brief, written narrative about their works and their experience.  As part of the program, participants will be offered the opportunity for a one-on-one session with the Spiritual Director to discuss what may have come up for them as a result of this exploration.
